BREAKING NEWS: PDP SACK ANYANWU, UNDERGOES MAJOR RESTRUCTURING AHEAD OF 2027 ELECTIONS.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has embarked on a significant transformation, approving key recommendations from the PDP Governors’ Forum. This move is part of the party’s efforts to reposition itself ahead of the 2027 general elections. The decisions were taken during the National Working Committee’s (NWC) regular meeting held at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja.
A major shake-up in the party’s leadership saw Senator Samuel Anyanwu removed as National Secretary. The NWC cited a recent Supreme Court judgment and the Governors’ Forum’s recommendations as the basis for this decision. Hon. Setonji Koshoedo, who has been serving as Deputy National Secretary, will take over in an acting capacity. A substantive replacement from the South East Zone will be nominated and ratified at the forthcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
The PDP has also approved plans to hold a NEC meeting on May 27, 2025, and a National Convention from August 28 to 30, 2025, in Kano. The convention is expected to address zoning arrangements, elect new national officers, and chart a new course for the party. To facilitate these preparations, the NWC has established two key committees: the Zoning Committee, chaired by Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, and the National Convention Committee, headed by Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.
In another significant development, the NWC has formed a caretaker committee for the party’s Delta State chapter. This decision follows the defection of high-profile leaders, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The caretaker committee is expected to stabilize party operations and re-engage grassroots supporters in the state.
The PDP leadership has reiterated its commitment to party unity and democratic governance. In a statement released after the meeting, the party urged members across the country to rally behind the latest decisions. “These measures demonstrate our resolve to rebuild the party, restore discipline, and prepare effectively for the 2027 elections,” the statement read. “We call on all loyal members to support the leadership and contribute actively to the party’s renewal process.”
As Nigeria’s leading opposition party, the PDP has vowed to continue engaging constructively with Nigerians and offering a credible alternative to the current administration. With these recent decisions, the party is signaling its determination to revamp its structures and emerge stronger ahead of the 2027 elections. The PDP’s ability to implement these changes effectively will be crucial in determining its prospects in the upcoming polls.
