BREAKING NEWS: ENUGU STATE TO UPGRADE STADIUM AND GAMES VILLAGE FOR 2026 NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL
Enugu State Governor, Dr. Peter Mbah, has announced plans to upgrade key sporting facilities, including the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium and the Agwu Games Village, to world-class standards in preparation for hosting the 2026 National Sports Festival. Mbah emphasized that these upgrades are part of a broader strategy to develop sports infrastructure, grow the state’s economy, attract tourists, and create job opportunities, with a goal of increasing Enugu’s economy from $4.4 billion to $30 billion.
He made this announcement during his investiture as President of the Enugu Sports Club and the commissioning of the remodeled clubhouse. The governor highlighted the transformation of Enugu’s infrastructure, including transportation, as part of his vision to position the state as a prime destination for business and leisure.
Additionally, Mbah expressed optimism about surpassing the state’s projected internally generated revenue (IGR) of ₦600 billion by 2025, which would support capital development projects and lift people out of poverty. He also reaffirmed his commitment to improving social services like education, healthcare, and water supply.
The Governor acknowledged the Enugu Sports Club’s historical significance, dating back to 1929, and praised its contributions to the development of the state. He pledged continued support to the club’s efforts in fostering recreation, social cohesion, and community wellbeing.
